Welcome to Grade Three
We are so excited to see all the new faces in our brand new building! I am looking forward to a great year in grade 3. Our agendas will be the main communication tool between school and home as well as using our classroom Remind app. If you have not signed up please let me know and I can easily get you started.
The following is an overview of our Grade 3 program.
This year we will be learning about numbers up to 1000, using Place Value.
Understanding, applying, and recalling basic addition and subtraction facts to 18.
Adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers.
Understanding and recalling multiplication and related division facts up to 5 x 5.
Solving problems using number, patterns, measurement, and data.
These skills will be distributed through the units of; Patterning, Numbers to 1000, Addition and Subtraction, Measurement, Fractions, Geometry, Data analysis, and Multiplication and Division.
Students will be involved in hands-on exploration, class assignments and the Mathletics online program to complement their work. There will be some homework sent as a review at the end of units and before unit assessments.
Reading growth is an integral part of our program. Reading material in class, is carefully chosen to be at a comfortable level for learning. We read a variety of material throughout our day. I strongly encourage nightly reading aloud to a parent. Students only grow when they have many opportunities to read. Read a text more than one time develops fluency and so allowing them to reread an old favourite has wonderful learning opportunities as does a new book at their level.
Writing tasks will take on a variety of forms. We will explore language skills to describe things in greater detail to make writing stories more interesting and notice how they can add excitement. We will participate in school journals, home journals, stories, lists, reports, experiments and many more writing styles.
Grade 3 students will explore Hearing and Sound, Rocks and Minerals, Building and Testing Building Materials, as well as studying the Life Cycles and needs of animals.
We will be examining communities around the world such as Israel, Tunisia, Peru, India and Ukraine. Exploring how people live and an understanding of the global community and our role within it.
Students will take part in various activities that will help them lead a healthy, active lifestyle and grow to appreciate the importance of physical activity. We will also cultivate cooperation, leadership, fairplay and teamwork. This year we are lucky to have a Physical Education teacher at Mary Bergeron who along with myself will also be leading some of our classes.
Students will listen to and explore different instruments and recognize that sounds are made in different ways. through movement, dance and singing, we will explore various kinds of music and the dynamics of music. We are fortunate to have Ms. Prince in the building teaching some music classes along with some music in our own room.
We will be a busy and industrious class!
